Trauma Management

We support active and adventurous children and we also know that sport is an important part of many children’s lives, including our own, but, unfortunately, sport is one of the leading causes of dental trauma in children. Accidents can happen at any time. As Paediatric Dentists, we are experienced in the treatment of dental injuries helping to fix the issue, prevent it in the future and provide a caring presence in what can be a traumatic time for both children and their parents or guardians.

Children’s dental trauma management in Perth

What types of dental injuries occur in children?

Falls, collisions or impacts from other objects can all cause dental trauma. Here are some of the most common dental injuries we see

  • Chipped, broken or fractured teeth

  • Knocked-out teeth

  • Loose teeth

  • Bitten lip or cheek

The management of dental or oral injuries can vary depending on a child's age and stage of development. Appropriate management at the initial appointment can have long-lasting effects on teeth, jaws and a child's facial development. Any damage to your child’s teeth, whether baby or adult, is serious and should be seen by an experienced Paediatric Dentist.

It’s our job to minimise long-lasting damage to your child’s teeth. A child’s maturity and ability to cope with the emergency situation, the timing of the loss of the injured tooth and the bite are all important factors that influence treatment decisions.

We understand that experiencing a dental injury isn’t easy for anyone, so we do our best to minimise any further pain and trauma your child might be experiencing. This may come in the form of sedation which will help make your child comfortable while we perform dental procedures.

In the unfortunate event that your child has an accident, contact us as soon as possible.

The importance of dental trauma management

As the saying goes, prevention is better than the cure, so we advocate the use of mouthguards to protect little teeth. Mouthguards work by acting as a cushion and absorbing any blows that may come in the form of a ball, limb or sports field. Custom-fitted mouthguards from a dentist are the easiest way to protect children’s teeth and we also encourage the use of helmets and protective gear for playing sport or engaging in high-risk activities.

At their next appointment, ask us about the best way to protect your child’s teeth.
