Dental Sedation

Options

Some children require sedation to assist in the completion of their dental treatment. Our goal is to make your child comfortable and complete treatment in a safe environment. Depending on your child’s age, anxiety, nature and extent of treatment needs, we may discuss options of nitrous oxide or general anaesthesia.

Sedation and anaesthesia for dental procedures

  • Nitrous Oxide

Nitrous oxide (also known as “laughing gas” or “happy air”) is a safe and effective way to relieve anxiety around dental procedures. It requires a child to be able to understand instructions and cooperate during the procedure. The gas is effective and safe, and the effects are reversed quickly at the completion of treatment.

  • General Anaesthesia

We may recommend general anaesthesia for children who are very young, anxious and/or have extensive dental treatment needs. It allows all treatment to be completed at one time while your child is asleep. We operate at Southbank Day Surgery alongside a team of Specialist Paediatric Anaesthetists and a highly supportive anaesthetic team.

Your child’s comfort is our priority. As well as sedation and anaesthesia, our dental office is brightly coloured and fun to ensure your child loves visiting us! Learn how we make your child’s first dental check-up a positive experience for all.
